The original author of these essays was Ingeborg Franke von Wangenheim.

Oskar Schlemmer, Weimar Bauhaus. Example of “New Objectivity” or “New Practicality” (Neue Sachlichkeit) artwork.

After the introductions, we asked Gustav Wangenheim about the goals for us, as troupe of actors. What kind of work should we be doing?

“Presenting reality in as many different contexts as you can,” the director said. To present reality…. How would we do that?

“You do it on the basis of the knowledge that you gain in your struggle for everyday existence.”

We sat back, rather stunned. Wangenheim was a master of long experience, however. We were ready to listen.

Audiences would flock to see our work, he said, “if you are able to do all the necessary labor for getting up on that stage, and speaking the truth.”

He stood up and started pacing.

“Consistently and relentlessly,” he said. “We always speak the truth!”
